Consultations for instructors

Our goal is to support UW instructors at all levels, novices to experts and everyone in between. CTL staff consult with faculty members, staff educators, graduate student instructors, as well as graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants. For this reason, each consultation is customized, collaborative, and evidence-based.

  • Customized: Consultants focus on questions specific to the group’s teaching contexts, needs, and timeframes. Consultants will help you answer your questions by raising questions, providing feedback, and finding resources
  • Collaborative: Consultants emphasize your expertise and collaborate with you to find instructional strategies that are effective for your group’s unique teaching context.
  • Evidence-based: Consultants draw on insights from research on teaching and learning and bring to the consultation data that will help you make important decisions about teaching.

Common instructional consultation topics:

  • Course and syllabus design
  • Teaching large classes
  • Employing inclusive teaching strategies
  • Teaching with technology
  • Gathering student feedback
  • Documenting your teaching / professional development

Services for departments and programs

CTL consults with UW departments, schools, colleges, and programs on questions related to teaching and learning that go beyond the boundaries of individual courses. CTL staff meet with chairs, directors, groups of faculty, and curriculum committees to provide expertise and assistance. As with all CTL services, the consultations are discipline-specific and evidence-based.

CTL can work with your department or program to:

  • Develop workshops on a variety of teaching and learning topics for faculty and/or TAs
  • Plan departmental programs for TAs
  • Assess and improve teaching
  • Plan for peer review of teaching
  • Develop programs and curriculum
